2.Shenzhen BeihaiA handful of fiber-optic transceiver makers have teamed up with connector vendors to develop what they hope will be a standard design for the next-generation pluggable optical transceivers. Together, the companies have set up the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) initiative with the aim of creating a common design interface to support several existing small-form-factor (SFF) connectors.MSA members recently finalized the specification document for the small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers backed by key connector makers-such as 3M Co., Lucent Technologies Inc. and Tyco Electronics-and are collecting signatures for distribution. Several companies have already signed off on the document. Optical transceiver companies helped determine the footprint and package dimensions, as well as the electrical and optical interface for the SFP or MSA pluggable modules. Connector manufacturers helped establish the standard for the electrical interface. A few key OEMs also played a consulting role. The pluggable SFP module solution, which consists of a cage/guard rail, SFF connector, and transceiver, supports todays SFF fiber-optic connectors. The SFF transceiver doubles the port density compared with a system using the hot pluggable gigabit interface converter (GBIC) transceiver for full-size fiber-optic connectors. The smaller size allows network equipment manufacturers to double the number of fiber-optic ports in their equipment. As connector vendors battled over which SFF connector would become the standar |
